What Are The First Steps To Take After Cycling Accident?

If you have been injured in a cycling accident your top priority should be getting the right medical treatment – everything else can wait!

If possible you should get:-

  • The name, address, registration number and insurance details of the driver involved.
  • The names and contact details of any witnesses.
  • The name and number of any police officers who came to the scene, and their incident reference.
  • Photographs of the scene of the accident – This is particularly important if your accident has been caused by a pothole.
  • Photographs of the damage to your bike, the damage to your helmet and clothing and also  any bruising you have suffered.
  • Documents that will help to prove your losses – the purchase receipts and/or repair estimate for your bike – receipts for damaged clothes – wage slips and so on.

Whatever happens, don’t discuss the case with the insurers for the other driver! It is now very common for insurers to contact cycling accident victims directly. But that is for the sole purpose of trying to “buy off” claims for far less than their true value.
